Human Trafficking Survivors Served

Nuances to keep in mind regarding data and human trafficking:

  • Individuals (youth, adults, elderly) who have or are experiencing labor and/or sex trafficking generally don’t identify as “victims” or “survivors” or disclose what they have experienced:
    • Individuals may not know what has or is happening is against the law
    • Individuals may be unaware of their rights to report, access support
    • Individuals don’t share information due to the threats and manipulation of the trafficker that include:
      • Fear, shame
      • Threats of harm, threats of being deported
      • Threats to family
      • Violence
  • Lower awareness level of labor trafficking:
    • There is very limited awareness of and resources available related to labor trafficking which results in,
      • Less or no awareness of indicators of labor trafficking
      • Limited training available for professionals on labor trafficking
      • Fewer service providers with experience working with individuals who have experienced or are at-risk of labor trafficking
      • Resulting in very low numbers.
  •  
  • There is more awareness of and resources related to sex trafficking which can lead to: 
    • More awareness of indicators of sex trafficking
    • Professionals who have training and knowledge on how to engage and build trust with survivors of sex trafficking and those at-risk
    • More referrals for assistance, services for survivors of sex trafficking
    • More individuals identified as having experienced sex trafficking
    • Resulting in higher numbers.

  •  A total of 1,106 victims/survivors of human trafficking were served.
  • 287 victims/survivors of labor trafficking and
  • 819 victims/survivors of sex trafficking were served.

Please note that while only 287 survivors of labor trafficking were served, this does not mean labor trafficking is occurring less than sex trafficking.

What do the “unknown” and “not reported” numbers represent?

  • This data report was pulled by the zip code of individuals who received services.
  • To ensure the “intake” process is low barrier OCVA grantees are not required to “ask” where individuals reside – which is reflected in the “not reported” and “unknown” categories.

OCVA has seven (7) Human Trafficking Services and Outreach grantees funded for three-years, July 1, 2020 – June 30, 2023.
