$10.5 million in grants awarded to 17 rural Washington communities
Grants from $24,000 to $750,000 will fund vital local infrastructure and services throughout the state
OLYMPIA, Wash. – The Washington State Department of Commerce announced that 17 cities and counties will receive a total of more than $10.5 million in Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) for 2018. Nineteen projects were selected from 31 grant applications requesting almost $18 million. They will improve rural water, sewer, streets and fire protection systems; and will support affordable housing and community planning.
“These funding partnerships strengthen rural communities by addressing a diverse range of essential needs, from priority infrastructure to affordable housing and economic development,” said Commerce Director Brian Bonlender.
2018 Washington State Community Development Block Grant Awards:
- Town of Conconully – $750,000 for new community services facility including fire hall
- Town of Concrete – $500,000 for wastewater treatment system upgrades
- Town of Concrete – $24,000 for water system plan/comprehensive plan
- Town of Endicott – $24,000 for sewer system infiltration and inflow study
- Town of Garfield – $24,000 for sewer system infiltration and inflow study
- City of Grandview – $750,000 for sewer main replacement
- Town of Ione – $750,000 for waterline replacement and extension
- City of Morton – $750,000 for wastewater treatment facility upgrades
- Town of Northport – $720,000 for new water reservoir
- Town of Odessa – $750,000 for drinking water supply and distribution improvements
- City of Othello – $750,000 for new water reservoir
- Town of Pe Ell – $748,000 for water main improvements
- City of Port Angeles – $745,044 for after-school child care program facility renovation and expansion
- City of Rock Island – $24,000 for park improvement plan
- City of Rock Island – $600,400 for wastewater treatment plant improvements
- Skagit County – $750,000 for regional homeownership assistance program
- City of South Bend – $710,650 for street reconstruction
- Stevens County – $750,000 for new water reservoir
- City of Stevenson – $400,000 for regional housing rehabilitation program
The state CDBG program receives an annual funding allocation from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and targets assistance to benefit lower-income populations in rural areas. Larger cities and counties receive CDBG funding directly from HUD. Since 1982, the state CDBG program has awarded nearly $520 million in grants to over 1,460 locally prioritized community development projects. CDBG will partner with other state, federal, local and private resources to leverage over $24.5 million more toward project costs. Many small communities struggle to find capital for essential projects, and these grants provide flexible gap funding to move them forward.
