Guidebook on civilian-military land use now available to community planners

State produces a technical assistance resource to promote civilian-military coordination in land-use planning

OLYMPIA, Wash. – The Washington State Department of Commerce today released the Washington State Guidebook on Military and Community Compatibility, a technical guide to land use planning surrounding military installations. Primary users of the guidebook will be professional planners and municipalities. It also promotes general public awareness and information exchange about the importance of coordinated civilian-military planning processes.

The guidebook reflects public input gleaned during community workshops, technical focus groups, and a stakeholder advisory committee throughout 2018, as well as a 30-day public comment period on a draft completed in April 2019. A compilation of the outreach prepared for Commerce by independent consulting firm MAKERS Architecture and Urban Design LLP is available on the program webpage.
