This page provides information about Commerce climate planning grants to help Washington counties and cities develop a comprehensive plan climate element and implement climate planning activities.
Climate planning grant recipients
Planning for climate change is required as part of the Growth Management Act periodic update process. Commerce administers a grant program to support local governments engaged in this work.
Commerce calculates an allocation for each eligible county and city consistent with RCW 36.70A.070(10). Allocation amounts are based on a jurisdiction’s population and the number of comprehensive plan elements it must update.
Jurisdictions must submit a grant application during an open application period to access these funds. Funding is contingent on appropriation by the legislature. Washington operates under a biennial (two-year) budget cycle, and each appropriation must lapse at the close of the biennium. Grant funds must be expended by the end of the contract term as Commerce cannot obligate funds from one biennium to another
The following table displays the total grant allocation each jurisdiction is eligible to request, the amount already awarded to each jurisdiction, as well as the climate subelements that the jurisdictions are required to develop.
