Applicants are requesting more than $35 million in funding to support rapid affordable housing development
The Washington State Department of Commerce received nine applications from nonprofit community-based organizations, housing authorities, and tribes in response to NOFA #MHU-2026-05, which was released in April 2026. Applicants are requesting $35.5 million, while Commerce has only $26.7 million available to award.
Once awarded, these funds will support organizations to develop their plans to provide affordable housing.
This funding opportunity will fund the acquisition, renovation, and preparation of properties for rapid conversion into enhanced emergency shelters, permanent supportive housing, transitional housing, or permanent affordable housing serving extremely low-income individuals and households experiencing homelessness. The application deadline was June 15. Applications came from six counties in Washington.
Award decisions expected in August
Over the next several weeks, the Multifamily Housing Unit will carefully review applications to ensure the limited amount of available funding is awarded based on our commitment to equity and expanding access to state affordable housing resources.
