Commerce receives 81 applications for Technical Assistance and Preconstruction funds

Applicants are requesting a total of $15.4 million in funding to support affordable housing development

The Washington State Department of Commerce received 81 applications from community-based organizations and nonprofit housing assistance organizations in response to a funding notice released in February.

MHU-2026-02 is the result of a proviso in the state’s 2025-27 Capital Budget directed funds to prospective or current affordable housing developers that would benefit from technical assistance and/or need  funding for activities necessary before construction can begin.

The application deadline was April 24. Applications came from communities across the state.

Applicants are requesting $15.4 million, while Commerce has only $2.91 million available.

This funding increases the capacity of our housing partners to deliver thousands of new affordable housing units across every part of the state. Read more about Washington’s affordable housing investment in the Biennial Investment Strategy.

Award decisions expected in June

Once awarded, these funds will support organizations to develop their plans to provide affordable housing, and to prepare competitive applications for future capital funding opportunities.

Over the next several weeks, the Multifamily Housing Unit will carefully review applications to ensure the limited amount of available funding is awarded based on our commitment to equity and expanding access to state affordable housing resources.
