Commerce committed nearly $6 million to the project
The First A.M.E. Housing Association recently broke ground on Phase II of the Bryant Manor Redevelopment in Seattle’s Central District. The project will bring 244 new affordable housing units to the western side of the site, prioritizing rental opportunities for Black seniors and families in the historically significant neighborhood.
Commerce has committed nearly $6 million to support the redevelopment, and team members were on hand at the event to help celebrate this next phase.
Among the speakers were Roxanne Buchanan, president of First A.M.E. Housing Association, and Earl Richardson, interim executive director. Both highlighted the importance of preserving the community’s cultural roots while building for the future.
The redevelopment will offer studio to four-bedroom units for individuals and families earning up to 60% of area median income, which is $90,420 for a family of four in King County. Plans include an early learning space, shared green areas, and access to transit, jobs, and services.
The project is part of a broader effort to ensure historically Black communities in the Central District continue to thrive for generations to come. Learn more about other Commerce-funded affordable housing communities on the Multifamily Housing webpage.
