| Building on last year's work, Commerce's Asset Building Program awarded 13 grants totaling $624,000 to organizations serving Adams, Chelan-Douglas, Clallam-Jefferson, Cowlitz-Lewis, Grant, Lincoln, King, Kitsap, Pierce, Snohomish, Spokane, Walla Walla, Whatcom, and Yakima counties, and Native Americans in the Puget Sound Region. The state funds will leverage $2 million local dollars dedicated to asset building for low-income Washington families. Coalitions include banks, credit unions, social service providers, housing and community action agencies, United Ways, local government and many other groups. By working together, communities can greatly expand financial education and planning, debt reduction and credit counseling, free tax preparation and access to the EITC, and promoting and expanding savings and use of banks.
