| Realize the Potential of Brownfields Redevelopment
What is a brownfield?
Brownfields are properties that can’t be built on or redeveloped because they are polluted with hazardous substances or contaminants. Picture an abandoned gas station, an industrial waterfront, or a former dump. All these types of properties can—and have been—redeveloped.
Why redevelop a brownfield?
Washington state has more than 2,200 contaminated sites. These sites thwart economic development because they repel potential investors. It’s tough to be a visionary developer when your neighbor will be an abandoned building sitting on polluted soil! Reclaiming a brownfield can breathe new life into a parcel of land, a business and even a community.
Brownfields also pose environmental challenges because they put the health of a community at risk until the contamination is dealt with. And redeveloping a brownfield protects “raw” land from development, helping to prevent sprawl.
What is the Brownfields Coalition?
The Brownfields Coalition is a partnership of the state Department of Commerce, King County, Seattle, Spokane, Tacoma and the Department of Ecology. We work together to make it easier for local governments, property owners and developers to return brownfields to a useful purpose by helping with the logistics and funding.
Because of the different types of brownfields, the complexities of cleanup, the many parties that must work together and more, taking on a brownfield might seem daunting. But the Brownfields Coalition is here to help you through the process with expert advice and resources. If you don’t find the information you need on this site, contact the coalition partner for your area.
For further information on the Brownfields program please contact Dan Koroma, Ecology Program Manager at 360-725-4062 or 360-407-7187 or Tom Stilz, Department of Commerce, Program Manager at 360-725-4045.
