The Washington Department of Commerce awarded more than $48 million to 40 public schools as part of the Jobs Act for Public K-12 and Higher Education Institutions, an initiate to create jobs and save energy costs.
The grants were awarded in 2010-2011 through two competitive rounds and were used for energy and water efficiency improvements. The immediate goal was to stimulate Washington’s economy by creating jobs. The Legislature recognized the need to create jobs quickly to alleviate high unemployment in the construction sector. The program's long-term goal is to reduce energy costs at the state’s public educational facilities.
