Transportation Guidebook Update
Commerce produced its first transportation guidebook in 1993. Since that time, the GMA and the state of transportation practice has changed significantly. Although Commerce produced new guidance to implement new transportation requirements, the original document has not been updated. The state now has VMT reduction goals and a new state energy strategy that also affects planning for transportation systems in Washington.

Over the next year, Commerce will consolidate and replace all of its existing guidebooks with a single guidebook on transportation planning under the GMA. Our goal is to produce a succinct guidebook that provides useful information for practicing local government transportation planners on how to implement the GMA requirements for transportation planning.
 
We would like your help and advice to make sure the guidebooks is a useful tool for local governments. Over the next year, we will be posting information and materials on this site for your input. If you can help, please get involved and let us know what you think.

What’s New
Commerce has just released the scoping report that concludes the scooping process. It contains the results of the scoping survey and our analysis and conclusions. This summer as we draft sections we will be posting them here for comment. We will be send you notifications via the list-serve when new sections or materials become available.

Project Timeline
Commerce is conducting initial outreach and scoping right now to ensure the final product covers the topics most helpful to potential. We plan to release a scoping document that presents what we’ve heard that will guide the development of the final product.
 
As we are developing guidebook chapters, we will be posting drafts on the project web site for you to review and comment. We plan on having the draft finished this fall and the final document ready in April of 2013. The full timeline is below.
