OLYMPIA, WA – During one week each November, Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) inspires people everywhere through local, national and global activities designed to help them explore their potential as self-starters and innovators. These activities, from large-scale competitions and events to intimate networking gatherings, connect participants to potential collaborators, mentors and even investors—introducing them to new possibilities and exciting opportunities.
“For the past several years, Washington state has averaged about 100,000 new company start-ups per year. These events across the state showcase the culture of innovation we have here to help spur jobs for the 21st century.” said Rogers Weed, Director, Washington State Department of Commerce.
According to Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, 388 million people around the world started businesses last year. Of these 165 million were between the ages of 18 and 35 and 163 million were women. More than 140 million early state entrepreneurs expect to create at least five new jobs over the next five years; 69 million are offering innovative products or services that are new to the marketplace.

The Global Entrepreneurship initiative kicked off in 2008, launched by former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Carl Schramm, the president and CEO of the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. Since then, it has grown to 115 countries—with nearly 24,000 partner organizations planning more than 37,000 activities that directly engage more than 7 million people. This year, Washington state will have one of the biggest schedules of events among all U.S. states.
