The state Legislature created the Drug Prosecution Assistance Program (DPAP) to handle the increased caseloads caused by successful drug interdiction programs. Select County Prosecuting Attorneys designated as prosecutorial assets under Section 236 to Chapter 36.27 RCW are made available and funded through this program for services towards reducing the caseloads of drug and drug-related charges in local jurisdictions. The Drug Prosecution Assistance Program (DPAP) Director, acting with the approval of the DPAP Advisory Committee, determines the selection and designation of elected prosecutor's as Special Prosecutors under this program. The Executive Director of the Washington Association of Prosecuting Attorneys (WAPA) administers the program, statewide. Commerce is the fiscal agent and distributes funds to the six Special Prosecutors as required. The Washington State Legislature, through the Violence Reduction and Drug Enforcement Account (VRDE), allocated $519,130 for the State Drug Prosecution Assistance Program for the program years beginning July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2009 (2007-2009 Biennium).
